How do you summarize a Cannonball? This was my introduction to without a doubt, the most fun you will have with your pants on!

Arriving as a “newbie” you soon figure out that all the other guys know each other as they come back year after year for this particular reason. But then you too quickly become a member of your new “family” and that is where it all starts.

The experiences along the trip will test you and with the teamwork involved it means you will laugh together and you will also cry with laughter together. The Cannonball involves getting lost together because the lead riders struggle to see markers at times. It involves helping your new mates out of trouble and receiving help when needed. It involves a formal dinner with candles and a white table cloth while camping! (One night only). It gives you time to think and reflect about life in general. This will “reset” your circuits and we all need that. You will see parts of Australia that will blow your mind. You will travel through these parts at an exciting but safe speed. You will meet interesting local wildlife (briefly).

What an Adventure - a volunteer's story

What an adventure! Nearly 6,000klm off road from Bribe Island to the beautiful Barossa via Uluru, raising much needed awareness and funds for DEBRA with a great bunch of people. Thanks to Kate and the Cannonballers, $32,000 has been raised to keep the national EB Nurse program going. As DEBRA is made up of mainly volunteers and very limited resources this is a huge benefit for our small organisation.

As Simone (DEBRA VIC) and I were new comers to the ride we weren’t sure what to expect. We had our swags, tent, limited clothing and marketing material (even managed to sneak in a blow dryer). My new Triton was packed up with all the gear we needed (which we thankfully didn’t have to use, like the spare tyres) and off we headed. Lindenberg & Co Mitsubishi generously sponsored the fuel and officials fees for the DEBRA crew. Along with support from local businesses in the Pittsworth District, the ride was all made possible for DEBRA to be involved.

I have ridden on three Cannonballs now, and look forward to the next one each and every year-but they don't seem to come often enough. For me its a chance to combine dirt bike riding with photography, travel, mates and good times. But its not just dirtbike riding, it's a chance to meet and ride with like minded guys, a chance to hone your off-road skills, a chance to tinker with your bike and learn some valuable mechanical skills (from the more knowlegible to the bush mechanic). Its also an opportunity to do that in a fully supported group.

My first ride I had never really had too much experience on dirt, but I love it now and have covered lots of different terrains on my KTM 990. Once the entry fee is payed, everything is catered for-Food, fuel, accommodation etc, so your only dipping into your pocket for souvenirs and drinking money. And its a lot easier to budget for your holiday, especially if you plan to bring the missus and kids to the ride destination.
